The C Language

Brief History of the C Language

What is the origin of the C Language?
In the fifties of the last century, there were a set of programming languages such as Fortran, Cobol, Basic, Pascal and etc…. and each of these languages was having its special field as the Fortran Language was used in the scientific and engineering applications, while the Cobol language was used in the commercial applications and the same for the rest.

The programming language developers have started to seek for merging these languages in one language characterized by the easiness of use and the rapid implementation. The first attempt was the CPL language which stands for Combined Programming Language as Cambridge University in the UK has developed it. The second attempt was by the expert Martin Richards and it is a BCPL Language (that was in 1967 in Cambridge University). The third attempt was done by Ken Thompson, and it is B language as this language was better than its predecessors while it is slow to some extent. In 1972, the C Language was created by the expert Dennis Ritchie in the USA and specifically in Bell labs.

In 1978, Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan have composed the first book for this language under the title The C Programming Language, which is considered the main resource for this language.

Features of the C Language:

The C Language has many features which attract the programmers such as the speed and being portable (as it can be used under more than operating systems). It is a standard language. In 1989, a standard version of the C Language was identified and named (ANSIC) which stands for American National Standards Institute C. Through cooperation between the American National Standards Institute and the International Standards Organization, the standard C language has been launched in 1990 and named ISOC which stands for International Organization for Standardization.
