The code-name Santa Rosa refers to the fourth-generation Centrino platform, scheduled for release in May 2007. The following features are planned:[1]

* second generation Intel Core 2 Duo (code-named Merom) mobile processor. The processor is similar to and still carries the codename Merom in common with that used on the NAPA platform although the new processors connect to the motherboard with Socket P.
* 800 MT/s front side bus with Dynamic Front Side Bus Switching to save power during low utilization
* Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset (code named Crestline) with Intel's GMA X3000 graphics technology and ICH8M southbridge
* Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n mini-PCIe Wi-Fi adapter (code named Kedron)
* NAND flash-memory caching branded as Turbo Memory (code-named Robson)
* EFI, a successor to BIOS
* Intel Dynamic Acceleration (IDA), better Windows Vista Aero support [1]

The chipset update was originally intended to include WWAN Internet access via HSDPA (code-named Windigo) codeveloped with Nokia [2][3]. After announcing a working partnership, both later retracted the deal citing the lack of a clear business case for the technology. [4]

Support for WiMAX (802.16) was originally scheduled for inclusion in Santa Rosa but appears to have been delayed until Montevina in 2008 [5]. There have however, been reports that WiMax may still be introduced in 2007.

Santa Rosa will feature an updated mobile Core 2 Duo microprocessor. Notably, the Front Side Bus speed has been increased to 800 MHz. The chipset can also dynamically change the FSB speed to save power.

Other power savings come from an Enhanced Sleep state where both the CPU cores and the chipset will power down.

Intel will also implement Dynamic Acceleration Technology with the Santa Rosa platform. This technology allows single threaded applications to execute faster. When a single threaded application is running the CPU can turn off one of the CPU cores and overclock the active core. In this way the CPU maintains the same Thermal Profile as it would when both cores are active. Many expect Santa Rosa to perform well as a mobile gaming platform due to its ability to switch between single threaded and multithreaded tasks.[6]

The Santa Rosa platform will be branded as "Centrino Pro" when combined with the enhanced security technologies Intel introduced with vPro and will be called "Centrino Duo" when they are not used.[7]

A refresh of the Santa Rosa platform scheduled for release in the 1st half of 2008 will upgrade to the 45nm Penryn Processor.

https://laptoping.com/asus-santa-rosa-barebone-notebooks-s37e-s62e-s37s-and-s96s.html

Intel announced next generation of its Centrino notebook platform, codenamed ‘Santa Rosa’. Designed for use with Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor, the Santa Rosa will incorporate 802.11n Wireless standard, ‘Robson’ NAND Flash hard drive cache, Graphics Media Accelerator X3000 integrated card and 3G WAN card. The new Intel Centrino platform, introduced at Intel Developer Forum, will feature 667Mhz up to 800MHz frontside bus, but the bus speed can be dynamically reduced and raised, as required by the operating workload.

The Santa Rosa’s ‘Crestline’ North Bridge chip is officially named the 965GM. It connects to 533MHz or 667MHZ DDR 2 SDRAM and the platform’s ICH8M South Bridge, Reg Hardware reports.

The 965GM chipset will contain Intel’s Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3000 integrated graphics engine with Clear Video Technology for piping video data through the pixel shaders.

The Santa Rosa, or the upcoming Centrino generation 4, will also incorporate ‘Robson’ NAND Flash module to cache data between the hard drive and memory. Intel said it reduces application load times and wake-up-from-sleep time for 50 percent. Robson save 0.4 watts of power, according to Intel.

CNet reports that Intel can now put its laptop processor into a deeper sleep state, because the Crestline chipset is intelligent enough to recognize whether data is stored on the processor’s on-chip cache memory or in memory. This means the chipset doesn’t have to wake up the processor to check the on-chip cache memory, and waste energy.

Also Display Power Saving Technology (DPST) 3.0, will save additional up to 400mW of power by switching between progressive and interlaced display modes.
Regarding connectivity, Santa Rosa will incorporate draft 802.11n through a MiniPCI card, ‘Kedron’. “To ensure optimal user experience with this solution before the 802.11n specification is officially approved, Intel has created an 802.11n interoperability program, working with leading access point vendors – including Buffalo, D-Link, Linksys and Netgear – to perform interoperability, performance, range and stability testing”, Intel reported. The platform will also support the 3G WAN card developed jointly by Nokia and Intel. The card will support the HSDPA download speed boost technology.

Both Robson and the 3G WAN modules are optional, Intel confirmed.

Santa Rosa will also feature professional tools for administration, manageability and security for laptops, just like as its desktop counterpart featuring Intel’s vPro technology.

The Intel’s Centrino Santa Rosa platform is scheduled for introduction in the first half of 2007.
